VW Caravelle
The VW Caravelle is a wheelchair accessible vehicle based loosely upon the Chrysler Grand Voyager wheelchair accessible vehicle conversion. Access is achieved through the nearside side door via a fully remote control powered door and integrated under floor cassette LIFT as apposed to a ramp as in most other conversions of this type.
The conversion consists of the whole entire cabin floor area being lowered by 10cm enabling a wheelchair to be located at either the front passenger or driver’s position, this still leaves room for an additional wheelchair to be stowed behind either of these two positions. Restraint tracking is fitted to the front, middle and the rear of the passenger compartment to enable manual wheelchair restraints to be used or alternatively an automatic tie down system can be used in either driver or front passenger positions for independent use i.e. drive from wheelchair.
The vehicle is supplied with both front seats in place and utilises their original seat belts, however, they have been modified onto a quick release system, should one or both have to be removed for wheelchair stowage.
The original rear bench seat, which seats three adults, is still in place and maintains it’s 70-30 split feature as well as its 3 x three-point, lap and diagonal seat belts.
In addition to these features the seat can slide forward to create more boot space or slide backwards to generate a larger internal space, all achieved by a simple single lever operation (Original VW mechanism).
